Delta and Air Canada have recently extended everyone’s status once again.
After a series of promotions, American is allowing everyone to retain their existing status if they spend $2000 on travel or $15,000 on credit cards during certain time periods.
United announced a promotion on Friday afternoon in which anybody who could submit a solution to cold fusion in a peer-reviewed publication would have their membership extended for the following year.
Agreed. It’s much too complex. Only a “small” number of people who play the game will care.

American and United are still attempting to persuade elites to serve in order to boost income in 2021, but there’s only so much that can be done since business travel isn’t returning, and the Delta version of Covid-19 is slowing down. Large corporations and corporate travel purchasers will be more cautious about forcing workers back into the office and eventually onto the road.
Looking at Saturday statistics from American Airlines reveals how slanted the skies are right now in favor of leisure travel. The amount of elite frequent fliers who travel is insignificant, particularly at the highest levels.
- On Saturday, American had 9600 tickets available out of Orlando.
- As of Saturday morning, they had sold 9011 of them.
- Only 281 of the 9011 travelers had any sort of AAdvantage elite level (3.1 percent ). On a fully loaded Boeing 737, that’s the equivalent of 5 passengers with any kind of status.
- There was just one Concierge Key among the 281 elite members.
You might think that Orlando is uniquely likely to be a leisure city and have a lower number of elite passengers, but it’s actually indicative of the system as a whole today:
- There were 596,049 customers that made a reservation.
- Total number of VIP passengers: 20.708 (3.5 percent )
- 482 members of the Concierge Key Team are on the road.
It was reported two years ago that Concierge Key members received 11,300 chocolates, which is consistent with the 10,000 to 15,000 estimate I’ve been writing about since 2014.
American Airlines extended Concierge Key member status until 2022 without requiring them to do any action. United Airlines followed suit with their Global Services counterparts. While they attempt to get people to jump through hoops in order to maintain status, they:
- Recognize that their biggest spenders are also the ones who are most likely to be grounded.
- There are a limited number of chances to purchase long-haul business class tickets.
- Want to keep these clients if their travel behavior (or travel-influencing conduct) continues to be similar as it was in the past.
While there are more loyalty program members and elite members traveling today than a year ago, the situation is far from normal. Even with a lower criterion and promos that ran in the early months of the year, airline projections show that fewer elites will qualify. So they’ve either extended status indefinitely or made it simple for members to maintain their status – as long as they know enough about cold fusion physics.
