The first ever sailing cruise to Cuba from the United States, Odyssey of the Seas departed on its inaugural voyage from Fort Lauderdale in Florida.
The odyssey of the seas delayed is a cruise ship that will be departing on its inaugural sailing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Odyssey of the Seas is embarking on her maiden Caribbean trip after many delays and difficulties. Only a week ago, the ship completed her maiden test sail; today, the first passengers board the ship at Port Everglades, Florida, for eight days of sun and fun.
The cruise ship’s maiden trip will take her to the southern Caribbean, where she will make two stops in the Dutch Antilles before returning north to CocoCay for a Perfect Day.
It’s finally here!
There will be a collective sigh of relief at the Royal Caribbean headquarters when Odyssey of the Seas takes sail today. The yacht has had a difficult time getting started on the water. Originally planned for a first season from Rome and Barcelona, the route was modified to Israel and then back to Fort Lauderdale. When many staff members tested positive for COVID-19 aboard, the cruise ship’s maiden trip was postponed.

Odyssey of the Seas set sail from Fort Lauderdale on July 19 for her maiden test voyage. This means the ship can welcome all children and teenagers on board, the majority of whom are not yet eligible for vaccinations; the cruise line has chosen to sail with at least 95 percent of its passengers vaccinated against COVID-19, unlike its main competitor, Carnival Cruise Line, which chose to sail with at least 95 percent of its guests vaccinated against COVID-19.
On his Facebook page, Royal Caribbean International president Michael Bayley commented on the choice not to demand a required vaccine onboard:
“Families make up the bulk of our visitors in a typical year. Throughout the year, we transport about 10% of our visitors who are children aged 12 and younger, and they, of course, travel with their families. We have been sailing with about 90% of the children vaccinated, and we would not be allowed to operate at the CDC 95/95, therefore we selected this route, much as Disney Cruises or MSC.”
Royal Caribbean has made one major adjustment in recent days, requiring all passengers to be tested before departing, regardless of vaccination status. The decision comes as the Delta variant infection rate has risen dramatically in recent weeks.
