Hyatt has announced that it will be sunsetting its elite status program for the first time in over a decade.

While Hyatt has put a hold on point expiry until December 31, 2021, they do plan to resume point expiration beyond that date. It’s critical for users who haven’t used their account since 2019 to earn or redeem points before the end of the year.
Stays (paid or redemption out of the account) aren’t the only way to keep points active; you may also earn points by eating at a hotel while not a guest or redeeming points on site for dining or spa charges. It’s as simple as transferring points from another program (such as Chase or Bilt) or purchasing 1000 points.
On this, I have three main points of view.
- If you pay attention, it’s not difficult to keep an account alive. The program’s economic model includes breakage. They’d probably make cutbacks elsewhere if they didn’t have it, so I’m not sure I’d want to see expiration points alter. Hyatt’s policy is on the liberal end of hotel program expiry restrictions, at 24 months.
- Hotel programs, on the other hand, are a little out of date in this area. They’ve tightened point expiry; for example, IHG and Marriott used to not allow points to expire. Delta, United, Southwest, and JetBlue, on the other hand, do not have any points that expire.
- Programs should continue to pause expiry for the sake of their own good, even if only for a few months at a time. I’d extend the deadline to March 2022. With the spread of the Delta strain of the virus, several companies have postponed their return to work. Many business travelers will not be able to travel again until next year. Programs should keep track of when their corporate accounts reopen – even for foreign travel – and not let member points expire until then.
After all, the number of Hyatts in Australia is very restricted. Australian citizens are still unable to leave the country. They also lack the ability to deposit Chase points into their account. This is a worldwide initiative, and travel hasn’t fully returned in all areas, as it has in the United States and Mexico, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Expiring points just as members are ready to go back on the road is a terrible idea.
In contrast to Hyatt, which has said that points would not expire until 2022, Hilton has stated that points will not expire until 2022. Hilton, of course, extended status and free night vouchers once again. We’re still waiting to hear from Marriott about their card certificate plan for next year, as well as whether or not they’ll make any further pandemic concessions.
