Amelia Island

Having been controlled by eight different powers, Amelia Island is also known as the “Isle of Eight Flags.” It’s characterized by lush, unspoiled nature, long beaches, and Victorian architecture. It has all the fixings for a perfect getaway, be it for a romantic weekend or a family vacation satisfying multiple generations. The island has been a tourist mecca for years and has a broad variety of accommodations including high-end resorts, charming bed & breakfasts, and condo rentals. Nevertheless it retains a pristine and relaxing atmosphere.

A great way to explore the island’s natural beauty is by water. Pick up a kayak at Kayak Amelia and explore the island’s wildlife, including sea turtle, herons, and manatees. If you’re lucky you might even meet a dolphin. Prefer to just enjoy the view? Check out tours offered by Amelia River Cruises and Charters or splurge and charter a sunset cruise with Windward Sailing.

A much-loved activity is horseback riding along the beaches and there are plenty of places to do it. Kelly Seahorse Ranch is a family-owned ranch located within the State Park. The horses are trained to be ridden by complete novices and the guides give a short orientation at the beginning of the ride. Still not convinced? They also offer bicycle rentals.

Dive into Amelia Island’s history at the Museum of History. The museum includes an Interactive Children’s Exhibit, bringing history to life for the whole family. There are also weekly narrated walking tours through the streets of Fernandina Beach, up historic Centre Street, and to the Silk Stocking District. Or take a horse-drawn carriage ride through Fernandina Beach accompanied by a historical narrative. Fernandina Beach’s 50-block historic district features beautiful Victorian architecture and includes many unique and charming local stores and restaurants.

You can also explore Amelia Island history at Fort Clinch State Park. It is one of the most well-preserved 19th-century forts in the country and offers daily tours with period reenactors.

Voted among the top 10 North American Islands by Condé Nast Traveller’s Reader’s Choice Awards.
