Celebrity Cruise Line has appointed Captain Kate as the head of its new Celebrity Xpedition cruise ship. Here’s what you need to know about this exciting announcement.

Captain Kate McCue will be the captain of Celebrity Beyond, the line’s newest future ship, according to Celebrity Cruises President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo.
The first American woman to command a cruise ship will usher in a new era for the company, sailing a ship designed by contemporary luminaries like as British designer Kelly Hoppen CBE, American designer Nate Berkus, and Michelin-starred chef and restaurateur Daniel Boulud.
Captain Kate’s desire to be a captain was sown on a voyage she took with her family when she was 12 years old. She informed her father that when she grew older, she wanted to be a cruise director, and he assured her that she could be whatever she wanted, even the captain of the ship.

When she assumed the helm on the Celebrity Summit, McCue became the first — and currently only — American woman to captain a major cruise ship. She assumed command of Celebrity Edge, the company’s newest ship at the moment, in September 2019. Captain Kate secured her position in history even further in March 2020, when she helmed the first cruise ship to sail with an all-female bridge and officer crew.
Due to the pandemic-induced hiatus, McCue also led the Celebrity fleet — and the cruise industry as a whole — back into operation when, on June 26, 2021, Celebrity Edge became the first cruise ship to sail with passengers from a U.S. port in 15 months.
On June 26, 2021, the Celebrity Edge will depart from Port Everglades.

Celebrity Beyond will be 17 decks high and 21 meters longer than Celebrity Edge and Apex, making it the company’s biggest ship.
She will have a remodeled Grand Plaza, an extended Rooftop Garden, a resort deck with cantilevered float pools, a multi-level Sunset Bar, a new speciality restaurant from Daniel Boulud named Le Voyage, and the familiar Magic Carpet cantilevered platform.

Beyond is expected to take sail on her first voyage from Southampton, England on April 27, 2022 for a ten-night Western Europe trip. She will next sail through the Mediterranean on a variety of itineraries until early October, before crossing the Atlantic to the Caribbean. Bookings are now available for purchase.
